SMURF cascade funding 1st call – evaluation

[Dutch version] Op dit moment worden de laatste activiteiten van het eerste SMURF project afgewerkt, dit wil zeggen dat tegen het eind van dit jaar het eerste project zal zijn afgewerkt. Deze week zullen we bovendien ook te weten komen aan welke activiteiten De Bosgroepen mogen deelnemen in het kader van het tweede SMURF project.

Tijd voor een eerste evaluatie!

Het SMURF project is uniek in haar soort omdat het – althans volgens ons – de eerste keer is dat er zo’n breed Europees project worden gelanceerd met als doel om organisaties te ondersteunen die private boseigenaars helpen in het beheer van hun bos. De doelgroep van dit project sluit dus zeer nauw aan bij de basiswerking van De Bosgroepen.

We voerden intussen meerdere activiteiten uit, waarbij ook contact met ons leden centraal stond. Dit is erg zinvol en kijken dan ook uit naar hoe deze informatie zal verwerkt en gedeeld worden. Daarnaast werd er ook gekeken buiten de organisatie, bij Vlaamse administratie en beleidsmakers, maar ook met organisaties uit de sector die het werk van De Bosgroepen mee ondersteunen. Hiervoor gaan de SMURF projectcoördinatoren in overleg met het Bosforum, in aanwezigheid van de verschillende deelnemende organisaties in België. Ook de resultaten van dit overleg kunnen zeer interessant zijn.

Halfweg het project was er ook de SMURF forest owners’ organisation Conference in Rome, waar kennisuitwisseling en -deling centraal stond. Hier konden we luisteren naar interessant sessies, maar tijdens de netwerkmomenten ook kennismaken met organisaties met een gelijkaardige werking in heel Europa.

Kortom, het eerste SMURF project was ons inziens zeer zinvol, maar bleef nog grotendeels op de oppervlakte. We kijken dan ook uit naar het tweede project om meer in de diepte te gaan en ook de eerste concrete projecten op te starten.

[English version] The final activities of the first SMURF project are currently being completed, meaning the first project will be finished by the end of this year. This week, we’ll also find out which activities De Bosgroepen will be allowed to participate in as part of the second SMURF project. Time for an initial evaluation!

The SMURF project is unique because—at least in our opinion—it is the first time such a broad European project has been launched, aimed at supporting organizations that assist private forest owners in managing their forests. The target group for this project therefore closely aligns with the core activities of De Bosgroepen. We have already carried out several activities, focusing on contact with our members. This has been very useful, and we look forward to seeing how this information will be processed and shared. We also reached out to organizations outside the organization, to Flemish administrations and policymakers, as well as to sector organizations that support De Bosgroepen’ work. To this end, the SMURF project coordinators will consult with the Forest Forum, in the presence of the various participating organizations in Belgium. The results of this consultation could also be very interesting.

Halfway through the project, we also held the SMURF Forest Owners’ Organization Conference in Rome, where knowledge exchange and sharing took center stage. We were able to attend interesting sessions and, during the networking opportunities, also connect with organizations with similar activities throughout Europe. In short, we believe the first SMURF project was very useful, but it remained largely superficial. We are therefore looking forward to the second project, where we will delve deeper and launch the first concrete projects.
